Antabuse Alcohol Treatment Do’s And Don’ts
Antabuse is often prescribed during alcohol treatment because it really does convince the alcohol not to use. If he or she sneaks a sip of alcohol the result is an unpleasant sequence of side effects including flushing, headache, speeding heart, dizziness and a prolonged episode of nausea and vomiting.
If you do decide to use antabuse during alcohol treatment –
- Do continue to eat foods cooked in wine as long as you know they have been cooked until the alcohol evaporates completely – if you are not sure about this then avoid the dish.
- Do read labels on cough syrups, homeopathic remedies and other medications that can contain as much a forty percent alcohol.
- Do be sure that your liquid vitamins are not suspended in alcohol
- Do use a non-alcoholic mouthwash to avoid symptoms.
- Don’t use a lot of perfume, cologne or aftershave that contains alcohol as you could have an accidental reaction to the Antabuse. Use essential oils instead.
- Don’t take just one drink to see what will happen; you WILL get a reaction no matter what.
- Don’t think you can drink and just bear the side effects; they are overwhelming and make it impossible for you to consume anything.
- Don’t be alarmed if you get a funny metallic taste in your mouth while using it as eighty percent of people experience that.
- Don’t take Antabuse if you have a significant history of heart or blood vessel disease or diabetes.
- Don’t take Antabuse if you have a history of severe depression, psychosis or suicide attempts.
- Don’t take Antabuse if you are taking antidepressants or anti-seizure medications as part of alcoholic treatment for a dual diagnosis
If you use some common sense while using Antabuse as part of your alcohol treatment it can actually serve to liberate you from your addiction.
